However, the current shareholder-centric version of capitalism prioritizes short-term financial returns over the long-term need for a livable planet. These priorities appear in corporate political activities as well. 

 

While there are legitimate reasons for companies to influence policy, this influence goes against the interests of the private sector as a whole when it puts profit above people and planet:

• It has largely served to weaken or block action on climate change, a widely recognized business risk
   

• As policy-makers respond more to companies and less to voters, it erodes the legitimacy of capitalism itself.
